How to get started with Private Surgery
Meet our team for consultation
Reach out to one of our specialized patient care coordinator to discuss surgical and non-surgical treatment options. Listening to you is where we start. Booking in is easy, and no referral is required!
One on one solution driven customized care
Our team will work together to come up with a customized care plan that includes pre-surgery preparation through to surgery, post-surgery reconditioning and beyond. We provide educational resources throughout your journey.
Timely surgical care and rehabilitation
We help you navigate all private options within the country, and you choose the option that suits you best. All surgeries performed with Acumen Health Surgeons are done in a private non-hospital surgical centre. There are many across all capital cities and main cities in Canada. Post-surgery support continues with easy access to our surgeons, nursing staff and therapists.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is it possible for me to stay in province?
Our surgeons have opted out of the AB Public Healthcare System so because they are completely separate and outside of the public, they are able to perform privately on AB residents.
Are hotels and travel included in the cost and do you help arrange them?
Hotel and travel is not included in the surgical quotes. Only Calgary’s quote (CSS) has one night included if the patient chooses to stay at the Best Western, where we coordinate an Acumen Nurse to provide care as well. If traveling to Toronto, Montreal, or Pheonix, the airfair and hotel is up to the patient to pay – we will typically have recommendations for hotels to stay at that accomodate our surgical patients better than other hotels that we can recommend but we don’t cover the cost.
Am I able to claim the surgery and travel + hotel expenses on my taxes?
Some patients are able to claim them on their taxes for a percentage to be reimbursed. Typically this is when a certian distance has been travelled. We do not have the details on this and cannot guarantee this will happen for you, unfortunatly you willl have to look into it on your own. However, we can provide you with letters and receipts outlining all of your surgical details and requirements.
Can the surgeon perform the direct anterior approach?
Yes, Dr. Snider, Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Sharma can all perform the direct anterior approach.
Can you do replacements in Edmonton?
Not at the moment, however in the next 1-2 years there may be a surgical centre in Edmonton that will accomodate this surgery type
Do I have to travel for my rehab/post-ops as well or can they be done locally?
These appoiintments can be done locally or via Telemedicine. In most cases, the only travel required is for the surgery itself.
Do you do hip/knee replacement surgery in BC?
Unfortunately we do not at the moment. We can do the Orthopedic hip/knee/shoulder replacement consultations in Kelowna or Vancouver, BC – however we only offer the surgeries in Calgary, Montreal, Phoenix, or Montreal.
Do you guys do payment plans for surgery?
We do not offer payment plans or allow payments to be made after the surgery. Patients may pay in multiple installments if needed, however payment for surgery is due in full prior to the surgical date.
How can I get my imaging or reports to you
Anything done in AB on an AB resident is available for us virtually on NetCare. Alternatively we can check if the imaging clinic has an online portal that we have access to (or can get access to). If not, we would have to arrange getting the physical images to the clinic for your surgeon to review. Two options here: You can call and request that they send them to us or that you pick them up and bring them with you to your appointment, this way tends to be a bit quicker. If we cannot do this, we would send you a consent form to grant us the ability to request them for you. Then we would wait for them in the mail.
How long do I have to stay in the surgical centre?
Arthroscopic surgeries are day surgeries and Arthroplasties (replacements) are typically 1-2 nights in the surgical centre.
How long do I have to wait from the time of my consultation until the surgery takes place?
Depending on the type of surgery and the chosen surgical location, the operation can take place approximately 3-14 weeks after.
How long does a PRP injection last?
The appointment length itself is 1hour. The duration over which the injections provide relief is variable. Research suggests pain relief lasting between six and twelve months, and 60-70% of patients experience some form of pain relief. There are still a group of patients who receive no benefit from PRP injection.
How long has Acumen been doing hip/knee replacements?
Acumen was founded in 2017 and has been doing hip replacements since 2022. Our joint surgeons also work publicly in other provinces and have been performing the replacements publicly for many many years.
How many surgeries has this surgeon done?
Our surgeons are all amazing, recommended, and highly experienced. We encourage patients to do their own research as we have them all listed with their Bio’s on our website.
How soon after surgery can I fly?
after 24 hours but be sure to stand up/move/stretch every 1-2 hours
What is the follow up process, do you do surgery then leave us on our own
We have multiple scheduled follow up check-ins with you, pre-op and post-operative appointments, as well as available touchpoints and rehabilitation care with our team. For replacements, you also have access to our on-call phone for nursing support.
What is the process if I have to travel out of province for surgery?
If you choose to have your surgery outside of your home province, we offer a surgeon-to-surgeon communication program to ensure a smooth experience. We’ll assist with the referral, paperwork, booking, and provide you with a quote. After your surgery, we have continuous follow up on your care. Usually, we recommend patients fly in 1-2 nights before the surgery, and stay 1-2 nights after depending on the surgical location.
What is the wait time to book a consultation?
Within 1-3 weeks. Sometimes they can be as soon as just a few days.
What materials are used in your replacements?
The implant itself is made up of combinations of metal. For TKA and Oxfords:
The metal components on the femur and tibia are titanium and cobalt and chromium with small amounts of nickel. The plastic bearing between the metal components is polyethylene that is specially treated to minimize wear.
For THA:
The metal components are titanium for the femoral stem and the acetabular cup.
The femoral head uses ceramic instead of the standard cobalt chrome head which can last longer and minimize the small risks of corrosion wear between the stem and head which occurs mostly just in other implant designs.
The plastic liner is polyethylene like the knees with all the special treatments that make them last longer than in the past and avoid wear issues that cause bone breakdown.
Titanium is basically always used for the cup and stem but there have been other options around for the head and liner – metal on metal, or ceramic on ceramic.
What type of approach do they perform/recommend
Different for each surgeon
What type of implants do we use (replacements)?
The brand we use for our replacements is Zimmer Biomet (CSS Specific)
What’s the approximate recovery time for XXX surgery? (asked in regards to all surgeries)
***dependant on the type of surgery.
Where does surgery take place?
This is dependant on surgery type, but generally, Athroscopic surgeries can take place in Edmonton (Weiss), Calgary (RSC), Vancouver (New West or Cambie Surgical Centre), Kelowna (OHSC) and Toronto (OV Surgical Centre). Joint Replacements can take place in Calgary (CSS), Toronto (Clearpoint), Montreal (Duval or Hanche Genou Clinique), and Phoenix (Banner Health).
Will they offer things outside of surgery (encourage conservative treatment)
Our surgeons will offer and educate you on all of the options you have, both surgical and non-surgical. They will explain the risks and benefits to each of those choices, their outcomes, and what they would or wouldn’t recommend in their educated/expert opinion.
Nutrition Recommendations?
Proper nutrition plays a key role in preparing your body for surgery and supporting a smooth, effective recovery. To help optimize your outcomes, we collaborate with registered dietitians, nutrition coaches, and also offer access to EnRoute, a curated nutritional support program. These resources ensure you receive personalized guidance on fueling your body before and after surgery for the best possible healing and results.
